As we grow older and enter the fifth decade in life, our metabolism starts to slow down and we begin to gain weight. Metabolism is the process our body uses to convert food into energy.
It can be affected by various factors, such as age, sex, muscle to fat ratio, thyroid levels, stress, and mood.
The metabolism is comprised of all chemical and physical processes occurring in the body, which require food that is converted into energy by the chemicals in the digestive tract. If it does not use the energy immediately, the body stores it in body tissues, such as the muscles, the liver, or as body fat.
The pace of the metabolism is determined by the nervous system and the hormones.
However, there are several effective ways to speed up the metabolism when you surpass 40, and thus energize the body and prevent weight gain:
— Your diet should be high in vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, so increase the intake of meat, dairy, fruits, and vegetables
— Avoid alcohol, salt, excessive consumption of carbohydrates, and processed foods
— Increase the intake of fiber and protein, preferably consume them in the morning
— Drink plenty of water during the day, to help digestion, detoxify the body, and keep it hydrated
— Drink ice water before meals to eat less and speed up metabolism, as the body will attempt to normalize the temperature and thus burn more calories
— Beans are rich in soluble fiber that decreases insulin levels and creates a feeling of satiety
— The alkaloid piperine found in black pepper boosts the metabolism, so add this spice to your foods and drinks as often a possible
— Try drinking oolong tea, as it is rich in polyphenols that help block fat-building enzymes
— Make sure you sleep at least 10 hours daily
— Start exercising 3-4 times a week, and try walking swimming, riding a bike
— Lower your stress levels and find an effective way to relax and soothe the mind and body
